Melons

Melons are round or oval, easily transportable in their own protective carrying case, which makes them perfect for summertime picnics.  They are sweet, juicy, and flavorful once ripe.  Originating in India, melons now come in a variety of colors and kinds, including hybrids.  Delicious by themselves at room temperature, melons can be eaten cold, frozen after blended, or added to fruit salads.
Ambrosia Melon is a unique cantaloupe that is luscious and sweet.  Preferred by more people in taste tests because the flavor is more intense than a cantaloupe.  The brighter orange color makes it that much more inviting!  Make sure you let it ripen, in our out of the fridge.  It should be fragrant.
Cantaloupe once ripe will sing to you.  The aroma is so inviting it's impossible to resist.  You have to be patient to hear the song, but it's well worth it.  Eat with a thin slice of prosciutto or add a squeeze or lime or lemon or a sprinkle of ginger, candied ginger, or salt.
Galia Melon looks like a cantaloupe outside and honeydew inside.  Sometimes called a Middle Eastern Melon, or an Israeli Melon, or a Passport Melon, or a Mediterranean Melon, they are sweet and juicy.  It should be fragrant when ripe and the color of the skin lightens.

Juan Canary Melons have a pleasantly sweet perfume when ripe.  It is so delicious that you will find yourself picking it up and sniffing it just to imagine the sheer pleasure that awaits in the creamy white smooth juicy flesh.  They have canary yellow skin and are oblong in shape.  The ends will be a little soft once ripe too but your nose will know.  This is a specialty melon.  pictures courtesy hormel and localharvest
Honeydew Melons have smooth skin.  Typically, Honeydews are pale green on the inside with a pastel green tint to their skin.  When you allow them to ripen (they will ripen on the counter or in the refrigerator) the sweet scent is intoxicating.  Honeydews are the sweetest of all the melons when ripe.
Honeydew Melons can have Orange flesh too!  The skin of an Orange Honeydew Melon will take on an inviting salmon colored tint as it ripens and it will give to pressure.  Of course, the tell-tale sign is that it will smell sweet inviting you to dive right into it's sweet smooth creamy orange fruit!  Also rightly called the Temptation Melon.
Sharlyn Melons look like an oval cantaloupe with a pale yellow-green interior.  The flavor is subtle and unique, like a hint of sweet perfume that is not overpowering.  It looks and tastes like a mix of a cantaloupe and a honey dew.

WATERMELON  Nothing calls for summer like a juicy sweet Watermelon.  Since they are 92% water, they quench our thirst on a hot summer day.  A picnic or day at the beach just wouldn't be the same.  And you can carve out a nice bowl out of the watermelon and put the juicy fruit back inside for a decorative way to serve it.

Watermelon juice (just throw it in a blender - without the seeds) is thirst quenching and can be frozen and added to lemonade for a colorful contrast.

Nutrition:  Low in calories and a great source of vitamin C.  They have as much iron as Spinach.  Also contains vitamin A, B6, fiber, beta-carotene, potassium, Lycopene, and magnesium.
Choose:  Should be heavy for their size and there should be a yellow underbelly where it sat on the ground.
Storage:  In a cool place until you open it, then into the fridge!  Ripens out of the fridge and in the fridge (slower) so in Florida hot humid climate, I like storing in the refrigerator to maximize freshness.  I also prefer my melons chilled for hot summer days.  Smaller melons will be fragrant when ready so take a whiff!  Watermelons will be full of juice - the thump test.
