Anyone who has been to our house knows that I love cookbooks.  I read them for ideas, I read them for recipes, I read them for stories, and I read them to get a sense of a time in history or a culture.  Cookbooks can open the world to us with flavor combinations and spices, from the simple to the sublime.  I love using the Internet to find recipes too, but nothing compares to leafing through a recipe book full of color pictures or impeccably measured calculations for great eats.  Please share yours, I especially need the best Hispanic, African American, Asian, cultural cookbooks as I don't have a best there as well as the best special diet cookbooks for kids and adults.  I also need the best Raw Food and Vegetarian cookbooks and any other suggestions or ideas you have.  I love good cookbooks!  Here are some of my favorites!  So far...

General Cookbooks that have it all -

Barefoot Contessa Family Style

Barefoot Contessa - nothing compares to Ina Garten's books.  I own them all and use them probably more than any other book.  The recipes are simple, great for every day fare and yet delicious enough for company or the unexpected guest.  The recipes are timeless.  Her style is upbeat and carefree.  Her ingredients are all things we have in our cupboard.  Every recipe is perfect!  This is a winning series.  I particularly like Family Style, but each book has unique recipes and ideas that are sure fire hits for everyone!

A Year in Chocolate

Alice Medrich knows Chocolate!  Every recipe is a delicious winner and a creative approach to chocolate with insights into why she uses what and how she came up with the recipes.

The lighter versions are every bit as delicious too.  Chocolate and the Art of Low Fat Desserts has winners throughout and no one will guess they are lower in fat.  They are gorgeous and delicious.

The Cookies and Brownies book I use regularly but I always add 1/2 whole wheat flour, especially to chocolate recipes.  I sometimes add Oat Flour instead of the White Flour too.

Bittersweet is a gorgeous collection of delicious and beautiful enough for guests desserts.

Paula Wolfert put together some great recipes and flavors, most are simple to prepare and are unique.  Wonderful pictures and flavors as well as a nice read.

The New York Times Passover Cookbook

    Children with Sensitivities
Feingold Cookbook for Hyperactive Children Many swear by the Feingold diet for children with sensitivities to foods.  I think a whole foods approach to this diet is best, eliminating transfats and hydrogenated oils.

Science Of Cooking - Not Really Cookbooks but review the hows and whys in fascinating detail

ON FOOD AND COOKING

Harold McGee - a book suggested by a loyal visitor, Jeffrey, and it looks like a winner to me too!
