Health Benefits

Elysian Isle Gourmet Avocado Oil, cold-pressed from the flesh of the finest New Zealand Haas avocados, is a 'true to label' exra virgin oil that retains the optimum levels of nutrients, flavor, aroma and color.  It is 100% pure and natural.

According to Dr. Atkins, author of the famous diet by the same name, "avocados are not only nourishing they are a heart promoting, cancer fighting fruit that offers unequaled health benefits." Avocados are full of nutrients and fiber. The average avocado has approximately 12 grams of carbohydrates, which is 1/3 that of an apple. They are also known for their high content of Vitamin E and monounsaturated fat, (the good fat).

Avocado consumption has been found to help the body combat other major diseases including diabetes, cancerous tumors and osteoarthritis. By eating avocados, the risk of heart disease in diabetics is lessened, especially those with insulin resistance or type two diabetes. That's because avocados guard against after-eating increases in blood sugar. Consuming avocados or taking daily capsules of avocado oil, along with soybean oil, has been shown to give knees and hips afflicted with osteoarthritis extra lubrication. As a result, sufferers gain better joint mobility and endure less physical pain.

Worldwide research has shown avocados to have very high levels of monounsaturated fats. These are the 'good' fats, which help reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the blood stream.  Laboratory tests consistently report Elysian Isle Avocado Oil at 75% monounsaturated fats.  The Saturated Fats are the "bad fats".  Elysian Isle is consistently at 14%; a very low level.

Avocados have also been shown to contain high levels of the natural plant compound beta-sitosterol, a member of the phytosterol family. The clean and unpolluted growing conditions found in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region provide the highest levels of beta-sitosterol in the world for oil extracted from the avocado. Avocados grown elsewhere typically average 750mg per 100g content versus 950mg per 100g content for Bay of Plenty fruit. When comparing these levels against olive oil, long recognized as a superior oil in terms of health, New Zealand grown avocados more than triple the beta-sitosterol levels of the very best olive oils.

Beta-sitosterol has an apparent ability to block the 'bad' LDL cholesterol absorption from the intestine, resulting in lower blood cholesterol levels. In addition, avocado oil is highly recommended for its high level of heart healthy monounsaturated fat, predominantly Oleic Acid, which accounts for more than 70% of each 100g. By using avocado oil on a regular basis in conjunction with a healthy diet, you can help your body to maintain a good cholesterol balance.

Elysian Isle is Heart Foundation Approved in New Zealand and Australia for its health benefits versus many other cooking oils.

Skin Care

Because of it's 100% pure, 100% natural state, Elysian Isle Avocado Oil is a premium grade and nourishing carrier base oil that can be applied directly or blended with essential oils to create quality massage, skin and facial oils.

Avocado Oil penetrates the skin more deeply than other plant oils (e.g. lanolin, olive, almond or soya-bean oils). Therefore it's an ideal base for transdermal treatments, & a natural carrier for added supplements to reach the deepest target areas. A research paper by Valette and Sorbin reported on the skin-penetrating properties of a number of oils. Of the oils tested, which included corn, soybean, almond and olive oils, avocado oil had the highest rate of skin penetration and the ability to transport active substances through the outer epidermis of the skin and into the dermis for increased effectiveness.

Rich in Vitamin E avocado oil is used extensively as a base in the production of soap, skin care, hair, sun protection and baby products. Internationally, avocado oil is recognized as a superior ingredient for these products. Problems, such as photo-toxicity and free radical formation associated with the use of other types of oils, are non-existent when avocado oil is used.

Avocado oil is renowned for its healing, anti-bacterial, and anti-wrinkle properties. The high content of lecithin and phytosterols, facilitates its spreadability. It stimulates the collagen metabolism, increasing the proportion of soluble collagen in the dermis, retarding visible signs of ageing and remarkably softening the skin. Research from UCLA Center for Human Nutrition in California indicates that avocados have the highest Vitamin E content compared to kiwifruit, nectarines, grapes, and peaches. Vitamin E is known to be powerful antioxidant 'mopping up' free radicals and helping to decelerate the signs of ageing, therefore avocado oil is natures' very special antioxidant.4

The multiple properties of avocado oil as a base product, properties such as emoliency, penetration, stability, skin softening and moisturizing, allow for reduced costs as many other ingredients can be eliminated from the formulations.

Because of it's 100% pure, 100% natural state, Elysian Isle Avocado Oil is a premium grade and nourishing carrier base oil that can be applied directly or blended with essential oils to create quality massage, skin and facial oils.

As a massage, skin or facial oil it helps protect skin from drying and improves suppleness. It has outstanding regenerative properties due to high levels of unsaponifiables - reputedly up to 11%. [ For the technically minded, unsaponifiables are mainly composed of sterols, essentially Beta-sitosterol, campestral, avenasterol and hydrocarbons which include squalene and alcohols].

Because of the high levels of essential fatty acids it has excellent restructuring powers to keep the skin moisturized.

Skin care products use the natural ability of avocado oil to regenerate connective skin tissue and to inhibit bacterial growth.

Avocado oil is an excellent base for ointments used for treating lacerations, dermatitis, acne and similar skin conditions. Also for post-operative dressings to prevent adhesions to wounds and skin burns whilst accelerating the actual healing process.

Avocado oil is an ingredient in upmarket skin care cosmetics and creams, highest quality soaps and shampoos, products for damaged hair, baby hair and sun products. It's also a good hair stimulant.

All these products can be formulated using natural ingredients that are hypo-allergenic and contain no sensitizers. This ensures safe use by all skin types under any climatic conditions.

Strong UV absorption properties, make it an ideal supplement to enhance the activity of UV-A and UV-B absorbers. This reduces synthetic sunscreen concentration, lessens irritation among some people, and enhances the desirability of the product. Among eight plant oils tested and studied for their effectiveness as sunscreens, (including Sweet almond oil, Sesame oil, Persic oil, Safflower oil, Peanut oil, Jojoba oil, Coconut oil, Olive oil) avocado oil proved the most effective sunscreen.5

Avocado oil is a high grade and nourishing, carrier, or base oil. Apply directly or blend with a choice of essential oils to create massage oils, skin or facial oils.

Avocado oil is very safe to use in cosmetics because it creates none of the problems related to sensitisation potential, photo-toxicity, free radical formation and comedogeincity. The multiple properties of avocado oil (i.e. emolliency, penetration, stability, skin softening & moisturising), can reduce costs and eliminate many other ingredients from formulations.

Compared to other oils, you need less Avocado Oil to get better results.

The Oil Process

Elysian Isle, dedicated to carrying the finest gourmet food products, discovered a small production facility dedicated to producing the finest avocado oil in the world. The company was the first to develop a method of cold pressing premium quality, natural, unrefined, extra virgin avocado oil that retains the health and flavor qualities of avocados.

Until now avocado oil processing was commonly done by a heating and chemical extraction procedure. This method created oil stripped of many of the excellent qualities found in avocados and was not generally suitable for culinary use. Our first in the world technology for cold pressing only the Haas avocado allows us to retain all of the natural richness, flavor and healthful properties of the avocado.

From the beginning of the oil extraction process we ensure absolute quality control. The pre-treatment program is the most extensive of any avocado oil producer in the world. Any damaged or imperfect fruit are removed and the fruit are washed, scrubbed, skinned and pitted prior to processing.

With only the flesh of the fruit being processed the average avocado provides from 13 to 22% oil. This oil is extracted at very low temperatures (below 113 degrees F) without the use of chemicals or exposure to the negative effects of oxygen or light. At no point in the process is the extracted oil subjected to any industrial processes that alter the original oil. This includes refining, bleaching, deodorizing, coloring, hydrogenating or the adding of any chemicals of preservatives. This ensures that you get only 100% pure, natural avocado oil.

The combination of leading edge technology, together with exacting quality control ensures that Elysian Isle Gourmet Avocado Oil is the best, true to label, cold pressed avocado oil in the world.

Elysian Isle Gourmet Avocado Oil is cold pressed, extra virgin, 100% pure, 100% natural and:

  • Is made from the first pressing of the fruit.

  • In achieving the "extra virgin" accolade, we make just a single pressing of the avocado flesh.

  • Our oil is "truly cold pressed".  The process is carried out at temperatures of approximately 113 degrees F.

  • Cold pressing at these temperatures ensures no damage to the nutrients occurs and the goodness of the avocado is preserved.

  • The acidity reading of the oil is less than 1%.

  • The oil is packaged in antique green glass bottles to protect it from the negative influences of light and oxygen.

  • The pit and the skin are discarded before the flesh is cold pressed.

  • Is refreshingly different from mass market oils.

  • Completely unrefined, a vibrant green color, soft nutty taste and a mild avocado aroma.

  • Absolutely nothing is added.  Elysian Isle is completely free of synthetics, chemicals, preservatives or colorings.

  • Contains no cholesterol, carbohydrate, flavors, sodium, yeast, dairy, egg, gluten, corn, wheat, sugar, starch or salt.

  • It has no animal ingredients, radiated ingredients or genetically modified ingredients.

  • Elysian Isle is not subjected to industrial processes that alter the original oil.  We do not refine, bleach, deodorize, hydrogenate or remove the color or other natural compounds from our oil.

  • Elysian Isle uses technologies that ensure all raw material inputs are processed gently and hygienically:

The stainless steel production line, applies an innovative combination of existing (and proven) food technologies.

The manufacturer operates a Government approved food safety program meeting the most stringent quality requirements of both domestic and international food retailers.

Avocado fruit are first inspected, then washed with high pressure water. The washed fruit are then processed to remove seed, skin and any potential for environmental residues.

The resulting fruit pulp is malaxed and centrifuged, using modern production machinery, to produce high quality, cold pressed, extra virgin, gourmet avocado oil.

Elysian Isle Infused Avocado Oils are cold pressed, extra virgin and are made from the same 100% natural, 100% pure Avocado Oil with an infusion of natural flavors and oils.

Olive Oil has an important share in the Mediterranean diet perceived as the healthiest diet among the nutrition types.

Olive Oil, Cholesterol and Coronary Disease : Bad cholesterol is at the top of coronary disease causes list. It is the main reason behind cardiovascular diseases and arteriosclerosis. Regular use of extra virgin olive oil reduces the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) which contributes to the buildup off fatty deposits in the arteries. In turn, it leaves HDL (good cholesterol) which works to actually remove any buildup in the arteries that has occurred.

Olive Oil and Digestive System : Olive Oil slows down acid overproduction in the digestive system thereby diminishing the potential for ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems.

From Babyhood to Adolescence : Olive Oil is recognized as important in maintaining metabolism and contributes to the development of the brain and bones of children.

Slows Down Natural Aging Process : Olive Oil recommended as a source of vitamin E for older people. As a natural anti-oxidant, olive oil slows down the natural aging process.

Olive Oil and Cancer : It is believed that with its anti-oxidant nature, Olive Oil has a protective effect against some kinds of cancer.

Lago di Garda Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  0.5 liter (17 fl. oz.)
The olive oils of the Lake Garda region of northern Italy are renowned for their elegant texture. The olives used for this oil come from 300-year old trees on the hilly eastern shore of the lake.

The unique micro-climate of Lake Garda's eastern shore (Veneto) has a mild winter climate and balmy summers, ideal conditions for producing the area's gentle olive oils. It is the northernmost point of olive production in Europe. Since the olive groves along the lake shore are very small, the various owners have formed a cooperative to press their olives. During harvest the neighbors gather together to pick the olives by hand. The olives are quickly transported to the frantoio and pressed as the harvest continues. The olives are hand-picked and quickly pressed to avoid bruising and acidity-causing fermentation.

From Sicily - 0.5 liter (17 fl. oz.)
One of our finest olive oils. Use at the table as a condiment on vegetable and pasta dishes. A superb salad oil. The substantial body and complex, multi-layered flavor of this oil is imparted by the rich volcanic soil of eastern Sicily. The Palumbo farm is located in in the province of Catania, in a valley formed by the Monti Iblei, a ring of hills surrounding miles of olive and orange groves. The farm consists of about 4000 organic olive trees and as many orange trees. The Palumbos feel that the proximity of the orange trees and the olive trees gives a subtle fragrance to their oil, both through the air and through the ground where the roots of both mingle. The Palumbos avoid the use of chemical sprays by hanging biological traps in the trees to attract the olive flies and prevent them from boring into the olives. The world's first scientific botanical description of the blood orange was written by Giovanni Palumbo's father early in the 20th century.

Renzo Bronda Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Liguria
  17fl oz.
Brothers Davide and Andrea Bronda cultivate their olives high in the hills above the Ligurian Sea, harvest them by hand, and press them in their own frantoio. Instead of using chemical sprays, they use natural methods to combat the olive fly. They hang biological traps in their olive trees to catch the flies before they can lay their eggs in the olives. They grind the olives themselves, with their own granite millstones, and first cold press the oil with their own equipment. Davide and Andrea's success with organic olive production has inspired many of their neighboring growers to go organic. Taggiasche olives yield an oil that is golden and buttery, with a hint of green. The oil has substantial body, with an open, sunny fragrance.

Thuya Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
From Puglia - 3/4 liter (25.4 fl. oz.)
The Murgia is an area of Puglia formed by a limestone plateau in the interior of north central Puglia. It is remote from pollution sources and has a perfect climate for the production of the robust olive oils for which the region is famous. Puglia is Italy's most abundant olive-producing region. In contrast to the industrial production methods of the large growers, Filippo Tandoi takes the approach of an artisan, glorying in the distinctive qualities of his oil that are the result of the unique soil, slope and climactic conditions of the Murgia. The specialty of Thuya organic olive oil is its delicately balanced elements: profumo (aroma), pizzicata (peppery flavor), amaro (piquant or bitter flavor), frutta (fruity flavor) and corpo (body). The oil is described as having a medium fruity flavor, with bitter sensations and sweet almond and artichoke aftertastes. Great for cooking and for salads. This oil will satisfy the taste of every connoisseur. Filippo uses the gravity method of filtering through cotton cloth, preserving all of the subtle flavors that are lost by the more commonly-used pressure filtration.

Certified Organic & Kosher

Olivico Organic Living Extra Virgin Olive Oil is "an essential natural fruit juice extract", a must in every kitchen. Heat alters oil's fine structure making it less desirable for our bodies. More Information on the Source!

Candela Peru is a developmental organization located in the Amazon region of Peru , pursuing the promotion of sustainable development of its population and the conservation of the natural rainforest.

Candela trades in the international and local markets, mainly in Amazon (Brazil) nuts and the by-products (Amazon nut oil, Amazon nut pod candles) of the nuts.

The Amazon nuts (Castanas) - known commercially as Brazil nuts, are the seeds of one of the great canopy trees of the humid forest in the Amazon region of the south of Peru . These nuts begin life at a height of 50 meters, where rare Eglousine bees - which feed on the flowers that grow in this tree - pollinate them, which is the first stage in the development of these fruits. Each summer, 1000 families come to the rainforest to harvest these Amazon nuts. The main resulting products, asides from the raw nuts themselves are nut oil, used in cosmetics and hair products and candles made using the outer pods of the nuts

The core strategy for Candela is to develop as many high-quality products and uses for the Amazon nut, in order to build a successful model of sustainable development. For example, the shells of the nuts are used as fuel to dry the nuts.

IN 2004, Candela has been registered as a FLO approved exporter of Amazon nuts and its by-products - an important achievement for the organisation.

Commitment to the Producers

Since 1989, Candela has been working with individual producers providing financial assistance, processing services, transportation and other non-financial services. It supports individual producers and encourages them to organise themselves in co-operative groups. In 2003, Candela developed a partnership agreement with SERRV International, an FTO from the USA (and fellow Clearing House customer) working together in capacity-building to empower castañeros – the nut collectors.

Commitment to the Conservation of Natural Resources

Since 1999, Candela has represented the NGO's of the region at the National Commission for the Environment (CONAM) in Peru . Since 2002 Candela Peru has been a member of the Forest Stewardships Council of Latin America and part of the committee who developed the standards for the Amazon nut as a non-timber forest product.

In 2004 Candela renewed a five year agreement with Conservation International to work on conservation issues in the region and Candela has have signed an agreement with Cesvi, an Italian NGO focused on the Madre de Dios region, working together on different research projects.

Kosher but not organic olive oil
  Picual

In the traditional press, olives are crushed.  A maximum water heat of 28°C is used to assist oil extraction earning its acclaimed status of "cold pressed".  This means Elysian Isle olive oil retains all the nutritional values highly prized with olive oil of this caliber.

Unlike the often highly refined olive oils found in many supermarkets, Elysian Isle olive oil is not filtered.  The slightly cloudy appearance means all the goodness and taste of the olive fruit is captured and retained adding to the enjoyment and nutritional richness of this spectacular olive oil.

Olive oil is best stored out of direct sunlight and in a cool, dark place which is why Elysian Isle olive oil is presented in stylish dark bottles.  This helps deflect ultra violet rays that can break down the oil and destroy its health-giving properties.

Olive Oil Process

  • The trees are shaken at harvest time and ripe fruit collected in a blanket under the tree.
  • The olives are washed to remove leaves.
  • They are put in a mill which crushes and grinds them into a paste.
  • A chamber holds the paste while it is gently paddled to release the oil molecules.
  • The olives are then pressed in either a centrifuge system, or in a traditional hydraulic press.
  • After pressing the oil is decanted or separated and stored in stainless steel tanks until bottling.
  • The oil can be bottled by hand (if volumes are small), using a bottling line, or contracted out to a commercial bottling factory.
  • Our award winning olive oil is a cold-pressed, extra virgin oil extracted from the picual olive.  This green-gold oil is mild and smooth with a very delicate, peppery flavor that subtly enhances the flavor of your favorite dish.
