Cotton

When we think of cotton, we think of pure, comfortable, soft, natural, breathable.  We think about "the fabric of our lives" and a healthier choice over synthetic material.  But Cotton Crops are big business and unfortunately take quite a toll on our environment.  Cotton farming uses more pesticides than any other crop.  While 3% of crops are cotton crops, 25% of all chemical insecticides worldwide are used in cotton farming!  In the United States alone, over 84 million pounds are used for cotton each year!  That's a staggering amount.  And the EPA considers 7 of the top 15 pesticides used in cotton to be "likely" or "known" carcinogens!  These huge crops full of insecticides and pesticides leak into our water systems, the air we breathe, deep into the soil, on the people working the fields, into the neighborhoods in the cotton farming area, into the plant and crop itself, wreak havoc on our delicate eco-system, wildlife areas, and make their way into our body and our children.

Conventional cotton farming uses toxic chemicals (insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers) and taxes our environment at every stage:

  • the seeds are treated
  • the soil is doused
  • more water is used since the soil is eroded and depleted
  • the plants are sprayed (blanket spraying, up to ten times per harvest, by air is common which means it floats to neighboring farms, watersheds, and wildlife areas) to kill pests and weeds (both of which are becoming resistant to the chemicals used today so strong and stronger toxins are being used)
  • and finally harvesting is done with toxic chemicals

Sustainable organic cotton uses biologically innovative techniques.  No toxic chemicals are used.  It is allergy-free and also free of bleach and harsh dyes.  It is much more time consuming; therefore the end product does tend to cost a bit more.  But the support of our future dictates we must take a serious look at this option.  One pound of cotton product equates to 1 1/4 pounds of toxic chemicals.  Just one cotton T-shirt requires 1/4 pound of chemicals.  One set of cotton sheets requires several pounds of chemicals.  Therefore, even ONE choice we make for organic cotton products makes a difference.   Vote with your dollars and let manufacturers know that this matters to you - the more we request organic cotton, the more it will become available, the more affordable it will become, creating a viable option and a safer future for us all.  Thanks to demand, even Costco offers organic cotton sheets now at great prices!
