CLA

Conjugated Linoleic Acid is an essential fatty acid.  CLA fights cancer.  CLA combats clogged arteries and may prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.  CLA may increase our metabolic rate, decrease abdominal fat, enhance muscle growth, lower cholesterol, lower triglycerides, lower insulin resistance, reduce allergic reactions to food, strengthen our immune systems, and can even help us control or lose weight; a June 2004 study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that CLA inhibits body fat while maintaining muscle.  Studies in Europe indicate a drop in the growth of tumors in people with higher CLA levels.

We cannot create CLA in our own bodies and therefore we must get it from our diet.  CLA is naturally occurring in grass-fed animals.  Dairy products from grass-fed animals as well as the meat itself from grass-fed animals are rich in CLA.  You can get grass-fed meat products from U.S. Wellness Meats and grass-fed dairy from Natural By Nature.  Most conventional meats, even organic meats, are grain-fed and do not have the beneficial CLA.  If a cow is primarily grass-fed but finished on grains to fatten up before slaughter, almost all the CLA value disappears in that short time.  Delicious Organics chooses to carry grass-fed options - grass-fed dairy and grass-fed meats.

How is CLA created?
Cows have 2 stomachs.  The first helps create these fatty acids so important to our health (we cannot create them, we need fish and cows to create them from the foods they eat.)  The naturally eating animal's stomach has bacteria that creates Omega 3 and CLA.  The second creates a higher Omega 6 and CLA.

Omega 3s are created by Beef and Fish from the plants and greens they eat.  They are an essential fatty acid for us but we can only get them from Beef or Fish as our stomachs cannot create omega 3s.  DHA can also be found in eggs of chickens fed flax seeds.  Omega 3s are anti-carcinogenic and important for brain, eyes, and heart health.
